Track and Field
Track and field involves events similar to what you would see in the Olympics. We have sprint events (100, 200, and 400 meter ashes), distance events (800 and 1600 meter runs), baton relays (4x100m, 4x400m, 4x800m), and field events such as the long jump, triple jump, high jump, shot put throw, and discus throw. Tryouts/Intramural's are run from early November up to winter break in December. After the team is chosen, the competition season (the meets are on Saturdays) runs from January to mid-February. Practices are held five days a week from 4:00-5:30 P.M. on the PE field.
Highland Oaks has had the most successful middle school track program in Miami-Dade County over the last three years. We won six county championships (JV girls in 2015 and 2016, varsity girls in 2016 and 2017, JV boys in 2016, and varsity boys in 2017) over that period. The 2017 JV boys finished runners up. Overall, HOM track since 2006 has had four runners up teams and nine county championship teams.
